Okay, so, I like my doctor just fine. She's friendly, she always asks me if I have questions and is very gentle during physical examines. HOWEVER, in my last appointment, I suddenly realized how dismissive she is. I'm sure most of my concerns ARE nothing and don't require any treatment or follow-up. But, especially as a first time mom, having absolutely know idea how all this is supposed to go, I would appreciate it if my doctor would at least wait until I was finished explaining my question or concern before she started shaking her head as if to say, "Don't bother with the details, it's nothing," the latter of which she usually tells me. "It's nothing," "That's normal," and "That's just one of those weird pregnancy things," are always her responses.
I think I didn't notice this until recently because either I didn't have any concerns or I wasn't very concerned about them. So, in my head, I was thinking, this is probably nothing, but I'll ask anyway. So she would say it was nothing I would think, okay, I was right, good thing I asked just to be safe. But in these past two appointments, I had two very major concerns.
My feet and hands were itching so badly I was scraping my skin off with scratching, creating scabs and open sores, but still it was itching, itching, itching. This, I thought to myself, is not normal. My cousin and a few other pregnant women I know have suffered from PUPPPs, which is a rash that 1 percent of women get while pregnant and the itching is incessant and torturous, but it usually starts on the belly and spreads from there. So I wanted to know if it was possible to have it only on your hands and feet, or if there was something else causing it. I told the nurse about it and she seemed concerned and wrote it in my chart. When the doctor came in, she didn't ask me about the rash, but continued on with how our appointments usually go. As I laid back for her to measure my belly, she glanced at my feet and said something to the effect of, "Oh, weird pregnancy rashes, don't you hate that?" Then I tried to explain more symptoms, when it started, how long it lasted, when it was worse, etc., but she wasn't interested. She asked if we had animals who could have fleas or if I was in the grass a lot. When I said no, she just shrugged and went on with the appointment. The rash went away, but at the time I was miserable and would have felt so much better if she had at least looked closely at my foot instead just basically saying, "Gee, I dunno."
Then, this last appointment, I had started experiencing contractions that actually hurt, although they were about 12 hours apart, but I still wanted to ask the doc about it. When I did, she just nodded, she didn't even say it was normal or not normal or good or bad. Then she started telling me that I'm measuring ahead and we need to do an ultrasound and might need to deliver me early - okay, bye!! I was so stunned and confused I just kinda wandered out of the office. I appreciate she's a busy doctor and we were her last appointment, but I would prefer a little bit more explanation and reassurance.
All that to say, I have an ultrasound today to see if everything is all right. Prayers would be appreciated for me and Baby R that everything is fine - and the doctor explains it well.
Just keep in mind, late ultrasounds are notorious for saying the baby is 2+ lbs. bigger than they really are. I won't say, "Don't let them induce," because I don't know your medical history, but if the ONLY reason they give is that baby is "too big," well, my midwife says, "If you can grow 'em, you can get 'em out!"
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you on that one. I'm not agreeing to anything without a sufficient explanation and good reason. I'm really worried, however, about them throwing medical facts at me that I don't understand and making it difficult for me to have truly informed consent or informed refusal - and I REALLY don't want anyone playing the dead baby card!
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to add that she wanted to check if I had too much amniotic fluid, not just because she was afraid the baby was big.
