christmas break {day one}

Today was my first day off of work for the holidays. I'm planning on blogging every day of the break, but, like I said, this is the first day - we'll see how things go.

We're heading to my parent's house tomorrow and hoping and against hope that Riley will fare better over this trip than over Thanksgiving. he's been sleeping better, but only occasionally. Last night he woke up twice, but the previous night he woke up a total of nine times between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., so it's hit or miss.

The three of us went to an old college friend's parents' house for dinner tonight, which was great because I didn't have to cook or do dishes and, of course, we got to show off the baby, something I like to do every change I get. It was a lovely evening with delicious food and good company and my heart was warmed by their hospitality and generosity. They gave us a gift for Riley, and I have to say that it might be my favorite baby present we've gotten: a compilation of children's books, like 10 or 12 books. Most of the books in the anthology are ones that Ryan wanted to buy for Riley, and now we've got them all in one go.

Riley is doing okay lately in terms of fussiness, although he still won't nap when he's at home with Ryan and I. His babysitter often says he's taken two three hour naps in a day, which is something I can't remember Riley doing at home since he was 2 months old. It makes taking care of him fairly exhausting as I have to put him down three or four times a day in order for him to get enough sleep. And since his naps are so short, I get a very small amount of "me" time every day. I end up staying up a bit too late every night when he goes to be just so I can get some things done that I enjoy (crocheting, etc.) It's hard to build time in your schedule for relaxing when you're tense during your relaxation time that the relaxing will be cut short. I think I just need to learn to live in the moment rather than anticipating what I imagine to be the next challenge I'll face, but I've always had trouble with that. I find myself always waiting for what's coming next rather than enjoying the now. I don't really like that about myself - maybe I'll make breaking that habit a New Year's resolution, even though that's really only a way to make sure I don't accomplish anything.

I've had several people mention my blog about Riley, "my son," and the challenges parenting him presents and I wanted to thank all of you who did. It's nice to know that not only are some people reading what I write here, but that they're actually appreciating it. I often feel that the comments section on each of my posts is indicative of how many people are reading them and, as you can see, that would make my readership slim to none. But after the post about Riley, it occurred to me that there could be a wealth of people reading this who don't feel the need to comment so just because I have one or none on my page doesn't mean I should stop blogging, close the page, and give up writing as a hobby and a profession for the rest of my days because I'm terrible and boring and try much to hard - although I think that last part is probably true.

Anyway, that was day one and tomorrow morning will come much to soon and I will have to finish packing, which means I'm much too tired to proof read this blog, so you can all live with the typos. See you tomorrow - hopefully.

You can't deny, he's the cutest baby ever.
